5 Signs Your Garage Door Springs Need Replacement

Garage door springs are the muscle of your entire system — they counterbalance the door's weight so the opener (or you) can lift it safely. When a spring fails, the door can become dangerous and impossible to open. Knowing the early warning signs can save you from a midnight emergency and a costly repair.

1. A loud bang from the garage. Torsion springs store a massive amount of energy. When one breaks, it often releases that energy with a sharp bang that sounds like a firecracker or a hammer strike. If you hear it, stop using the door immediately and call a pro.

2. The door feels heavy when lifting manually. Disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway. It should stay in place on its own. If it slams down or feels very heavy to raise, the springs are likely worn or broken.

3. A visible gap in the spring. On a torsion spring, a break leaves a visible gap in the coil. On an extension spring, the spring will look stretched or separated. Either way, a visual gap means it's done.

4. The door opens unevenly or jerks. Worn springs can cause the door to bind, jerk, or open crooked as the cables struggle to balance an uneven load. This strains the cables and rollers and can lead to bigger damage.

5. Your springs are over 7-10 years old. Most springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles — roughly 7-10 years of normal use. If yours are older, have them inspected before they fail unexpectedly.
