What to Do When Your Garage Door Won't Close

A garage door that refuses to close is more than an annoyance — it leaves your home and everything in your garage exposed. Understanding the most common causes helps you decide what's safe to fix and when to call a professional.

Check the photo-eye sensors first. Modern openers have two safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. If anything blocks the invisible beam between them — a box, a leaf, or even cobwebs — the door will reverse and refuse to close. Make sure the sensors are clean, aligned, and facing each other.

Look for obstructions on the track. A small object, a bent track, or a roller that's jumped can stop the door. Never force a stuck door — it can damage panels or the opener.

Inspect the springs and cables. If the door feels very heavy or hangs unevenly, a spring or cable may have failed. This is dangerous — do not try to lift or operate the door. Call for emergency repair.

Listen to the opener. Clicking but no movement can mean a stripped gear, a bad capacitor, or a logic-board issue. These require opener service or replacement.
